Extreme Poverty in Armenia: 1800 to Today (and Tomorrow)

In the 1800s estimate, 45 percent of the population lived below the international extreme poverty line, a reality where the threshold of survival dictated the rhythm of daily existence. This sustained retreat of destitution continued through the 1960s at 8.67 percent and the 1980s at 2 percent. By the 2020s, extreme poverty in Armenia stands at 0.5 percent, ranking #25 of 157 countries.

For a child born in the 2020s, the probability of facing such conditions is 0.5 percent, a stark contrast to those born centuries ago. This trajectory suggests that by the 2030s projection of 0.38 percent, the structural constraints of the past will be largely absent, with future projections reaching as low as 0.2 percent by the 2060s. This shift has changed the horizon for generations, moving millions toward a more secure future.
